Communitree

What is it?

Senior year of college I was part of CommuniTree, a team initiated to create an interactive installation that targeted a subject of social awareness. We called our installation “Nature’s Voice”, an artistic interactive physical installation with living plants and a capacitive touch system to allow for sound to emanate from the plants when users touched or connected with them.

What was our goal?

Our aim was to bring to attention the importance of environmental awareness in our daily environment, and we did so by providing our target audience a new interactive perspective towards the green in our lives.

What did we do?

This being a milestone project, a year was spent on gathering user experience data, learning skills required for the technological function of the product, creating a website for the portfolio, and working through different design iterations before landing on our final working product.

SEA - Self Esteem Awareness

What is it?

In my Interactive Media and Design major, I had the opportunity to hold the role of web designer in one of my assigned teams. Each team had to build an interactive installation that addressed a social issue. Our team name was SEA, Self Esteem Awareness.

What was our goal?

Our goal was to create an installation that would give its audience a better understanding of the effects of low self-esteem, and showcase the importance of improving self-esteem through positive social interaction.

The experience of the installation ended up requiring an entire room ‘walk-through’ to articulate our intent through a physical form.

What did we do?

The room was split in half by a wall to ceiling black curtain, one side displaying low self-esteem, and the other displaying improved self-esteem. Projectors on each side of the room would project moving words onto the black curtain in a loop, words that matched the theme for each half of the room.

The poor self-esteem side had a mirror contorted by reflective material that eschewed the viewer into a malformed shape. The improved self-esteem had a mirror lit up by a UV-light and glowing markers to write good things on the smooth surface for others to read and be encouraged. Words like “You are beautiful” allow people to rise to a better, healthier morale and helps them in ways that can’t be imagined.

MyAccess

What is it?

Junior year saw me in a group designing a mock mobile app. MyAccess (MA) was an aggregate for multiple forms of social media and online communication, designed to have communications from all social media accounts visible in one app.

What was our goal?

The point of the app was to make communication easier, though the difficulty with this mock app ever becoming a reality stemmed from the potential security issues. If there was a hub of multiple social mediums and social networks which only required one password to access, security would be at risk; while two or more authentication logins would only make going to this hub more difficult than simply viewing all social media apps separately.

Career Window

What is it?

Career Window is a mock mobile design of my own individual creation. The assignment was to make a video prototype of a possible mobile app and edit the video using Final Cut Pro.

What was my goal?

I designed my project with the purpose of assisting unemployed graduates in finding jobs by giving them a better idea of what to expect within available job roles.
